Facebook Connect: the ONLY way forward!

Displaying 51 to 60 of 81

There is a Facebook connect plugin for vBulletin. That works pretty well but you must have php5 to run it.

Also, I don't think its a good idea to build that into PHPfox natively. A XML based plugin system is best. Like vBulletin has.

In the meantime if you have vBulletin integrated with PHPfox you can download the plugin and it will work.

Like the other guy said...I wish they would just work on the core features of phpfox. Natio does awesome work...He did a great job on the site. But I think building too much into the core of PHPFox makes a potential quagmire.
Let the 3rd party plugins expand the reach of your product.

Of course, keep up the discussions.

You want to know what I like on phpfox 1.6 most? It's the possibility to translate everything.

Take Europe in example. We have up to 129 diffrent languages spoken here, most people don't know this, many others outside Europe expect that everyone is able to speak english here, but that's totally wrong. Take me, the language I did grew up was saarlandish and I assume that you never heard of it because only 2 million people speaks it and there are no books to learn this language, it's only a spoken language. And because of we borders to France, Luxembourg and Germany, we only learn German and French in school. Later we had the choice of taking spanish, latin or greek. English we are used to learn from watching californian porn movies or playing Super Mario Brothers on Nintendo Entertainment System. Those who don't watch these movies or play these games, they just arent able to speak english.

... but those people need a social network too. So we got to get something for them, in their language.

... phpfox 1.6 seems to be very flexible in languages, best of what I have seen so far. There's only one big issue in phpfox 1.6: The latin usernames.

There are names in this world you simply can not transform to latin letters. You perhaps can come close to how it sounds, but never hit the exact translation of a name.

When I am now in a network with latin letters only, how could I find my contacts and friends from China, Russia or Egypt? It's almost impossible and simply too difficult.

Could you find the word "Facebook" when it would be written in German pronounciation letters ... "Fbuk" or in Russian "Файзбук"?
Or could you find yourself when your name is written "Глабаглы" ?
Another example, you could not register with the nickname "phpfox" in russian community where they would force you to take kyrillic usenames only, because the characters "h" and "x" of "pHpfoX" don't exist in kyrillic.
It could be transliterated as "pgpfoks" .. but wouldn't you prefer to register there with your real name "phpfox" ..? I hope that you understand it's much more social to be "yourself" .. same goes for your friends of course. Isn't it strange that you have to remember your local friends under new and strange nicknames in your favorite social network?

With restricting software to latin letters only, you put yourself borders around your community. On the one side it's difficult for foreigners to join, on the other side it's difficult to expand.

That's why I fight so much for this suggestion: http://forums.phpfox.com/project.php?issueid=1783 . Forcing everyone to have a latin username will block your community growing! Not everyone has an english keyboard or the english language installed on his PC. Don't underestimate this please. I still could laught today about a friend of me from England when he wanted to use my PC to write an email back to home. He was totally lost because he couldn't find any english letters on my keyboard. =)

I think it could be worth to open an own topic to just talk about phpfox 2.0 in general, just to learn a bit more about each other focus. Could help to find solutions for everyone. If phpfox will be not too concentrated on USA market, then there's a chance to sell the product in other countries too, so they will get more money for future developments of phpfox to just realise everyones wishes.

I'd prefer a phpfox 2.0 product where only the social ideas are implemented. Facebook connect could be done too by the phpfox developers as well, I don't care, but please as a seperate module to download. For me, there should be not any facebook code in a new web 2.0 script that should be better than Facebook or fight against Facebook.

I'm absolutly sure it would be possible to let everyone forget about facebook, when the phpfox developers will work on the right parts and in the right corners of their social network script.

That's why I dislike it a bit when the developers time is ripped to implement FBC already in the beta by default. There are much more needed things to work on that your community will get a lot members and grow.
For me, FBC stay something extern and I would say that a modder here can do this job of implementing it and sell it for $5 to the community.

.. but okay, Natio already gave his word to work on FBC for PHPFOX, so it will be, but I would keep voting to not have this in the default v2.0 script.

^^^ PHPFox is a European company. Seems like they should understand all that above.
And I agree... Keep Facebook out of the default code. Who knows how facebook or myspace may change thier services. lol, Facebook almost got sued for chaning thier terms of service to claim ownership of everything.

They changed it back but still...I think that time would be better spent working on an awesome XML plugin system to perfection.

Yes that gave me the hope and why I bought a phpfox licence.

They understood it a bit later (after v1.6), but better than never, that having names with special charaters like in their swedish language is important to have in a social network script, so they put a "real name" or "display name" field... but it's not enough I think...

This was already a very important step forward, but I'm very unlucky to still have the required field "choose a username" in our phpfox 2.0 alpha registration progress, although we have activated the ID system. I thought that the upcoming ID system will solve the latin username issue (and the username forcing in general)...

In this case I could ask now: Why Facebook isn't using a latin username field? Why Myspace removed the field to need a username out of their registration form and moved it into the member options as an optional setting? Simply because they noticed that this is blocking to get your community bigger.

Now, a new script called phpfox 2.0 is on development, so I please to not implement this blocker again into the new script. At least not when the ID system is activated. It just make no sense anymore then and it's only something negative and useless in this case. I'd prefer to have this also just as an optional setting, to replace the ID url with a better looking "username-url".. ( with )
.. but best would be ID only or username change only for a special usergroup.

They only recently in the in past few months changed their DBA to Benc Enterprises AB and changed their headquarter location to Sweden even though it may have been internally Sweden.

Their headquarters had previously been NewYork based for as early 2006, not that an address matters but if you were basing it on that then you would have to say they are in new waters right now.

Company Name Change & Minor Cosmetic Updates

You may have noticed late last night we replaced “Realityfox” and “PHPFOX Limited” with “Benc Enterprises AB” on our main website and its sub-domains.
phpFox is now being developed and managed under the new company name “Benc Enterprises AB”. There has been no changes within mangament or ownership, this was simply a company name change to prepare for what we hope for other future endevours and we also wanted to remove “fox” from the company name and have “phpFox” as the registered brand name instead of a company name.

1.6.x Was way finished before the move to Sweden. Although Natio is all around person, he has been living and working in Sweden. As for the team of developers he was originally working with, I'm not sure but I think they were spread around Sweden and other parts of the world. I know Aitoc joined up with them in November of 2006 to handle their custom develpment. But using a USA address sorta speaks for itself about what the focus was for so long imo.

Remember it is alpha for development purposes only - Not to reveal planned features.

Natio has already confirmed this several times to be optional.

I'm all for support of special characters, languages and other world features. I do however, believe the lang method from 1.6 if that's the idea they are sticking with is garbage and needs a hell of a lot of tweaking.

Pros:
  • Able to edit from acp
  • Able to manage multiple langs from acp

Cons:
  • Not easily sortable - needs more search features
  • Takes up too much space - Needs some kind of streamlining
  • Needs better use of categories
  • Too many pages to search thru - Should have shortcuts to lang package
  • They need to decide if everything is going to be in lang manager or some things hardcoded in the file which is not cool as in 1.6
  • Not as easy to manage as files on server.
  • Counter Productive

Example lang file that governs the global lang of English:

See how much easier it is to navigate one page versus 50 plus pages for the same content in phpfox? Now imagine if you had multiple languages to work with, that would be double, triple and etc of the work and turn that simple section to about 200 - 400 pages in phpfox for one section. Phpfox you only see so many results per page and imagine with multiple langs and you have to use the tix box in addition to update which ones on that page you want to save. Then you move on to the next page after a page refresh mind you and so on and so on.

With the file above, you simply change any lines you want in one go and click save. Viola! Look at how much time a translator just saved Tongue Of course you have a separate directory for each lang pack but atleast you are not overwhelmed with weeding thru endless pages to find one item to edit.

PS. I'll be sure to post this over there somewhere, but i believe I did suggest this method before at one time or another.

Yes ut for everything you say in this massive speeech, you miss one vital point - average joe only knows and cares about what is in front of his nose. He uses the net for shoppiing, news and sharing social stuff with friends. Average joe does not care what is beyond facebook etc, average joe has not even heard of twitter yet.

You are forgetting that the world is not interested in the development of social media, they will go where their friends are and were its easy to use and mainstream.

Using FBC as a recruitment tool NOW, is a hell of a lot more of a stratey than sitting around waiting for the world to wake up....

I registered few years ago on Facebook because I heard about it in a facebook clone site ... =)
I was interested about the "original", but then I did notice the low privacy on facebook and the commercial aiming behind that site. You can believe me that I have good connections to people working behind facebook. My believe is that Facebook is not the future of social networks.
So I simply wouldn't orientate so much on what Facebook is doing .. It's very easy to just do it better. And about openID, I also wouldn't support it so much, simply because nobody here is using it.

Where did you read this? And what do you mean with it? Do you want to have phpfox for english people only? Perhaps this is also why many people in this world wont join Facebook or other english sites. I want to provide these people a better network, based on phpfox .. And when phpfox is too concentrated on Facebook, I have the fear that the final product will become the same shit, you know?
Our community dont want to be facebook or a clone, we are aiming to be something better.
If you did bought a phpfox licence to support Facebook, it's fine for me, but I want something better, like I said above, phpfox 2.0 should be something that makes your members forget about Facebook. Simply because this site contains no love!

I think it's okay to also teach the Americans that the world is bigger and that there can be also better networks with higher quality and more fun. That's everything. It's just meant positive for those who only knows yet Facebook or Myspace or Youtube or Google or Twitter or whatever..

I just can promise you that if you take a bit distance to Facebook and what you already know, your horizon in social media will be expand to greater dimensions. There are also other "internets" on the internet, an internet, where Google, Youtube and Facebook don't even exists.. Can you imagine that? =)

Beeing english just block your community growing. Beeing facebookish as well ;-)

@clubugly: I know, they just moved to Sweden.. but I feel that it matters where the developers and the management come from.
I have a lot negative experiences with developers from Germany and England in the web 2.0 area. Good experiences I have with developers from the USA (New York), Russia (St.Petersburg), Slovenia and Sweden.

Simply because they noticed that this is blocking to get your community bigger."

"Who told you this or where did you read it? "

I have a lot of connections to many little and big networks and I get directly informed about new plans and strategies of all of them. I also pay for information sometimes. It's very important because when you plan as well to have such a big community like facebook have, then you should not run into the same mistakes they already solved. You can learn of the good things they do and you can learn to not do the bullshit they made.

Just take vkontakte.ru in example, almost 28 million people there, started some years later than facebook, with no money and with no users.. only with the idea of a social network and with a good selfmade script ... do you think that we would have so many users there now if they would be the same like facebook? No, they made it just better, with more sense behind, with a deeper kind of fun.
They are not providing a Facebook Connect to get new members or activity on their site, no, if you want your site booming or beeing a hype, then you got to build your website on a stable foundation, build in the features which are social for your friends, and then it's already done.

When you have a great web 2.0 script, then you got other problems: How to handle all these hundrets of people who register every day and uploading their pictures, music, videos, etc...
Your problem will not be how to get new members anymore, your problem is how to stop them using your site too heavy. Your database will explode rapidly and you aren't able to work later on the database again, it would cause a downtime of your site of several weeks Smile

That's why I think it's very important to solve now all possible blockers to not run into problems at a later time, problems that will stop your community growing.

@thefandango: I know this Average Joe and that he never cares about anything he does... ^^ Who of you really did read the agreement of Facebook when registered? Average Joe always accept everything because his friends were also already so lazy to read the disadvantages in privacy on facebook.

For most networks, Facebook, Myspace, Vkontakte, StudiVZ, etc... they say that privacy on the internet must given away to keep the network alive... that totally wrong.. there are so many possibilities to get money through your network without collecting and seeling your users data and without putting commercial ads on.

Europe got much better privacy laws than any other government, and many people here just don't go to these social networks because they already know that they have no control anymore over their files they are uploading ... Did you know that you can not delete your private photos anymore once you did upload them to facebook? .. I know, they have a delete button there, but it's only a fake. Same with all messages, videos, music etc you are uploading there.

I want to provide all people a better network with full control over their files, under the European Law. Even only 1.000.000 people who's name is not Average Joe will use this network, I would call it already a success. I know a network that was very successful until it changed the agreement to lower privacy, they just lost 2 million users within 3 months... I will not forget this, all my friends there never appeared again or manipulated their own profile with fake entries to get a bit more anonymity back, but this network was no fun anymore.

After this, we were talking about where we should move now... shall we go to Facebook? Ah no, it's the same shit, we already knew. Sadly, there is no other good social community yet, and all my friends spread into diffrent local networks. I did lost a lot of contacts because I can not be in so many diffrent networks. The networks we are now are "cheaper" and more boring than Facebook is, but we have a bit more control over our privacy.

This is the chance I see for phpfox to do it better, so every of my friends can join back into a positive network. ... but I'm sure, when there appears a "facebook connect" logo or when they will read something about facebook in the code, they will not trust your network anymore and they will not register and invite their friends.

That's one more reason why I am against this FBC, you just make free advertisement for Facebook and you support them. Every network that supports Facebook, Google or other mafia syndicates is not serious in my eyes.
So please keep this shit out of PHPFOX 2.0 ;-)

Want you get a famous community with a lot members and traffic? Then start to create a serious network! Most of your users will love you for this and not for beeing a facebook pimp :p

lol sorry, have fun with your facebook connect, I think I'm out of this thread now .. ^^
