v3 Introduces DnD Mode
Posted August 12, 2011 by Raymond Benc in phpFox v3

v3 will introduce a major improvement with how Admins can work with blocks on their sites. We currently support adding and managing (dragging/dropping) blocks from the AdminCP, however this can be hard to judge how the block will look and function on the specific page you are working on.

With v3 we have something called "DnD Mode" and once this is enabled you can browse the entire site and easily drag/drop blocks as well as add new blocks on the spot. You will have visual confirmation of how the block will look and function on that page and if you don't like it you can remove it right away.

Here is a little sneak peak of this feature in action. In this video we will move blocks up/down and left/right as well as add a new block.

To add to the feature lineup for v3 here are some screenshots of some of the technical and aesthetic improvements with our mobile module.

Our mobile module has support for all the main modules we include. Making it also a lot easier for developers to include a mobile version of their product.

We are pleased to announce that the first beta release for version 3 will be on August 31st.

For those that haven't followed up on version 3, be sure to catch up here.

More information about v3 will be released on August 31st.

Some quick answers to FAQ's that have come up...

Is v3 a new engine?
No. v3 is using the same engine as v2. So add-on transitions for 3rd party developers should not be an issue in comparison to when we released v2 (which was a new engine).

Will there be an upgrade script for the first beta release?
No. The upgrade script is reserved only for RC versions. The beta release will only be for clean installs.

Will v3 include the Page feature that Facebook has?
Yes, we are introducing an early version of this feature with the initial release of v3 with more improvements to the module to come after the stable release.

What will happen to the Group module if we introduce the Page module?
Unlike Facebook we are going to be dropping the Group module and instead use the Page module to create "Groups". When a category is selected and it is considered a "Group" or "Community" (which Admins can control) instead of "Liking" a page it will have a membership system. Thus functioning the same as how our current Group module works with all the permission perks that a Page does not have on Facebook. Our goal is to focus on one module and integrate the best of both worlds. To clarify the Page module a bit more, when you create a page for a band or anything else than a Group/Community, then your members will "Like" this specific band/person/item; while if the Page is designated as a Group/Community your members will become a group member.

When will the new development cycle begin?
Once v3 stable is out we will start the new development cycle.

Will there be further updates about v3 until August 31st?
There might be, however we are focusing all of our time on completing as many features as we possibly can before the deadline and any time away from that will only push back the release. More information about v3 will be released that day and the days after that.

What feature do you think we're developing in this picture?

When hovering over the block another color(darker grey) lights up to show that you are hovering over it.

Auto Cropping Profile Photos

v2 provides the ability for users to crop their photos after they change their profile picture. We still provide this feature, however we introduced the feature to attempt to auto-crop an image for the user to create a cleaner look for your community.

CSS Cropping of Photos

With v3 you can enable an option to crop all the photos within your photo section using CSS to give it a cleaner/organized look.

Photo Battle Full Mode

Keeping up with our new design the Photo Battle section by default shows images that are battling 2 sizes smaller then how it works now, however we provide "Full Mode"; which will allow users to continue battling with larger images.

Forum Threads/Posts in Activity Feed

Likes on Posts

With a later version of v2 we introduced "Thanks" for forum posts. With v3 this will be replaced with Likes as we need to keep up with how the rest of the site works where any item can be Liked.

Attachments/Inserts on Posts

You can now attach/insert (eg. photos, videos, files etc...) items with posts.
